EU Might Respond to ‘Unwarranted’ US Travel Restrictions, Official States

The EU might “act quickly and firmly” in response to what it calls “unwarranted” travel bans issued by the United States against five Europeans involved in combating digital hatred and disinformation, a European Commission spokesperson has said.

EU Officials Condemn US Move as ‘Intimidation’

Officials from Europe including Emmanuel Macron accused the US administration of “bullying and threats”, following the visa restrictions targeted figures who have been at the heart of campaigns to enact laws regulating US-based technology firms.

“For far too long, ideologues in Europe have spearheaded coordinated campaigns to coerce US companies to punish US perspectives they disagree with,” wrote a senior US official in a social media post. “This government will not stand for these egregious acts of censorship beyond its borders.”

Widespread Condemnation From EU Nations

Nations including Germany, Spain, and the UK, alongside numerous EU representatives supported France in condemning the decision.

The restrictions were enacted on Tuesday against an ex-European commissioner who helped draft the bloc’s Digital Services Act (DSA), as well as four anti-disinformation campaigners, from two in Germany and two in the UK.

An Escalating Conflict Regarding Governance

This European legislation is seen by US officials as a form of censorship, while European leaders argue the regulations are essential to control hate speech and disinformation.

This row threatens to become part of a far wider ongoing cultural and political conflict involving the current US administration and Europe.
