The US central bank reduced interest rates on midweek, marking the second rate cut this year during financial volatility originating from the government closure and tariff policies.
Decision Comes at Extraordinary Moment for Federal Reserve
The decision to reduce the key rate by a 0.25% to a span of 4% to 3.75% arrives at an extraordinary moment for the central bank. The authority has been under significant strain to cut rates even with ongoing price increases.
Central Bank Announcement Notes Labor Market Changes
In a statement, the Fed stated that the unemployment rate had gone up but stays modest. “Job gains have slowed,” the release notes. “Inflation has risen and remains somewhat elevated.”
Federal Closure Hinders Central Bank’s Task
The continuing government stoppage, now one of the longest in American history, has also hindered the central bank’s task. Gathering of key economic data has been indefinitely halted as employees at the Bureau of Labor Statistics are on leave during the shutdown.
Information Shortage Affects Policy Decisions
The Fed typically studies BLS data to determine labor market conditions, including the number of new jobs added to the market and the present unemployment rate. The last jobs report was published in early September, prior to the shutdown, and provided a somewhat gloomy overview of the jobs market in the previous month.
The number of positions created to the market in August was lower by more than 100,000 since the spring, and joblessness crept up to four point three percent – the highest since 2021.
Private Data Show Ongoing Slowdown
Though BLS was scheduled to publish last month’s employment data in early October, it halted its release when the closure started. Private payroll firm ADP indicated earlier this month that the business segment eliminated 32,000 positions in last month, a sign that the job market is still decelerating.
“Supply as well as demand for workers has fallen quite sharply,” Fed chair the Fed chairman said recently, a trend he had earlier said comes from trade and immigration measures.
Inflation Report Shows Gradual Increase
Though BLS’s employment data has been suspended, the agency still released its inflation report for last month that showed that prices are rising, albeit slowly. Prices increased 3% over the last year, the peak since January. In spring, the yearly price increase was two point three percent, the lowest it has been since 2021. The central bank’s goal inflation rate is two percent.
