A defense minister has confirmed that the Ministry of Defence is actively investigating the potential security risks associated with Chinese cars, and staff have been advised to avoid talking about classified matters in any vehicles.
Safety Guidance for Defence Staff
In a recent appearance on a radio station, a defence minister addressed claims that MoD officials have been instructed not to talk about classified material while travelling in Chinese cars.
The minister explained that the MoD is “investigating” cars from China within its vehicle pools, but emphasised that safety is a concern in every modern cars.
Our department has a collection of tens of thousands of cars in the Ministry of Defence and those vehicles account for a tiny fraction.
However whether you’re traveling in a vehicle from China or a car from another country, what we’ve asked our staff is not to plug Ministry of Defence devices into their car, to avoid having discussions at a classified level in any car, due to the increasing threats of surveillance that exist in every single vehicle, to restrict those confidential talks in protected areas. That’s a wise and sensible thing for everyone concerned about safety.
After it was put to him that it would be wise for the ministry to cease using every Chinese vehicles, the minister responded: ‘That’s exactly what we are looking into at the present time.”
Broader Security Context
The announcement comes as reports from Scandinavian countries have alerted the UK to the presence of multi-purpose kill switches in Chinese-made buses, which could allow the Chinese government to disable public transport and cause disruption to public transit.
Furthermore, a Russian intelligence vessel has been shining lasers at RAF pilots, described as a “extremely risky” act by defence officials.
The broader security situation underscores the significance of strong protocols and vigilance in every aspects of official operations, from vehicle usage to communication habits.
