Individuals Coming Off Anti-Obesity Injections Gain Back Pounds Far More Rapidly Compared to Dieters

Obesity treatment involves ongoing approaches.

Fresh analysis reveals that individuals who stop using new GLP-1 drugs like semaglutide or tirzepatide may regain lost weight much more quickly than those who halt traditional lifestyle plans.

Published data in a prominent health publication demonstrates that while overweight individuals frequently drop about a fifth of their body weight while using the jabs, the weight is regained at an estimated rate of 0.8 kg per month once they quit.

"Users using these medications need to be informed of the potential of rapid weight regain when the therapy concludes," stated lead investigator Dr. Susan Jebb.

Such speed of recovery implies a return to starting mass within about one and a half years.

Weighing Therapies

The analysis, which looked at 37 of trials involving over 9,000 of participants, compared the results of GLP-1 agonists with older methods.

Scientists point out that people who shed pounds through dieting typically see a slower weight regain—around 0.1 kg a month—once they finish.

The Reason for the Quick Rebound

Doctors suggest the way of the injections explains the amplified weight return.

GLP-1 drugs copy a body's own chemical called glucagon-like peptide-1, which controls appetite.

"Sustained high doses of the hormone concentrations far above than the body's typical production might result in the body to generate a reduced amount of its own natural hormone, and could diminish responsiveness to its effects," said Dr. Adam Collins, a nutrition expert.

"Stopping of this medication leads to appetite is no longer kept in check, making overeating far more likely."

A Chronic Condition?

The NHS advise the jabs for individuals with obesity-related medical conditions, accompanied by recommended diet and exercise modifications.

Professionals argue that, considering the high risk of weight regain, the therapy might need to be life-long.

This opinion is reinforced by drug manufacturers, who note that the findings "highlight the persistent nature of obesity," similar to managing diseases like hypertension.

Patient Experiences

Individuals who have stopped the medication report a powerful resurgence of hunger.

"I experienced a switch that goes on and I was suddenly ravenous," said one woman.

This challenge is worsened if users have not developed permanent lifestyle or habit changes during therapy.

Significant Use

Survey data show that millions of adults in the UK have tried weight-loss jabs in the past year, with demand continuing to grow.

  • Use is higher among women than males.
  • The middle-aged demographic shows the greatest usage rates.
  • A large proportion obtain the drugs through private prescriptions rather than the NHS.

Finally, clinicians stress that while the jabs are powerful agents for weight loss, they are not a standalone solution and lasting health benefits hinges on combined behavioural support.
