Whenever a major honors show draws close, you'll find an outcry for introducing of new categories to recognize unsung work and satisfy the hearts of followers who have specialized interests.
My colleague previously argued for a horror game category. That would be fantastic. The same goes for board games, representing a passionate advocate's mission. However, I must insist when I prioritize since similar to dedicated enthusiasts, I have a cast-iron argument supporting my request stands as crucial above others. Here's the proposal: We need a category for puzzle games.
Categorizing Game Types
Classifying creative works isn't exact; it remains highly personal, and inevitably start arguments and end in fuzzy definitions. This explains why movie academies steer clear of genre categories. However, it represents an unavoidable compromise for the industry of interactive entertainment, that demonstrate such variety they hardly constitute as a single art form.
For comprehensive acknowledgment of interactive entertainment excellence to receive acknowledgment, and for games of all stripes to compete fairly, classification by type becomes crucial.
Present Award Structure
The major gaming awards currently feature genre categories for Action-oriented games, Action/Adventure, RPG experiences, Combat games, Sim/Strategy, and Sports/Racing games. Together, these six categories actually cover many game types, and you can find room accommodating various experiences.
Not so for brain-teasing titles. No appropriate category exists to accommodate them. Consider three of outstanding current releases, each quite distinct: the architectural riddles of one title, the pulse-pounding block-matching in a different title, and the sweetly sociological logic puzzles in another game. Where could they possibly go within current classifications? Unfortunately, nowhere.
Recognition Challenges
Numerous examples exist outstanding logic titles published annually without proper recognition at major award shows, except when they manage to fit classification types such as Mobile Game, Virtual reality experiences, or the intensely contested independent game categories.
- One classic puzzle game wasn’t nominated in any category that year
- A different innovative game was excluded that year
- A beloved organization game was overlooked in 2021
- Limited numbers of logic titles barely qualified for niche award types
Significance of Puzzle Games
Commonly they're compact experiences, but the art behind logic titles is of massive significance. Well-known matching games rank among most popular titles worldwide maintaining this status for an extended period.
The legendary block-stacking game challenges famous sandbox experiences claiming status as best-selling game of all time; it’s also in the running for top gaming experience. Logic titles represent cornerstones within interactive entertainment, and they are in conversation with almost every other genre.
The Solution and Justification
Puzzle games wouldn’t have that issue. You could fill a field of five interesting, varied, worthy titles annually without trouble — or rather, with difficulty, since numerous excellent many worthy titles.
And to reiterate, these represent titles lacking appropriate categories in important events. Puzzle game makers function at the hard edge game development, developing some of most fundamental forms within interactive entertainment. Similar to cinema stunt performers, they merit acknowledgment. We shouldn't delay decades.
